Nationals 2024 - Day 2 Wrap Up

Carlile featured in a huge 16 races on day 2!

Another big day for the team saw 6 swimmers progress to the finals, a gold medal in the 50 Fly timed final, and 2 top 10s finishes in the boys 800 freestyle.

Swim of the Day...

Swim of the day goes to Olivia Wunsch winning the first gold medal of the meet in the girls 17 years 50m Butterfly. Liv's pb time of 26.34 saw her claim Gold by over a second. As this is Liv's last year racing as an age grouper it was great to see her defend her title following last year's win in this event. Keep it going Liv!

Backstroke Bests...

First final of the night saw Isobel Mulcahy and Maya Ostapenko make their second final for the meet, racing in the girls 14 years 200m backstroke.  Both girls got up at night and swam faster than their heat times in massive pb's.

Maya came home very strong to finish 4th in a time of 2.20.77 dropping 3.47 seconds off her entry time. Issy touched 5th in 2.21.08 dropping 1.60 seconds off her entry time. It was great to see both girls represent the club in a tough race and qualify for another swim at Olympic Trials in June.

With a busy program ahead, it's been a very successful start to their 2024 National campaign.

200 Fly Finals...

In the girls 13 year's 200m butterfly Carlile had 3 girls qualify for the final!

Special mention goes to Emma Ng who came away with a bronze medal and dropping a huge 10.10 seconds off her pb across the heat and final today. Emma paced her race very well, moving through the pack in the 3rd 50 and passing two girls through the second 100. Brilliant swimming Emma!

Alexia Mantle and Maisie Langley also featured in this final with both girls swimming pb's for the second time today. Alexia's time of 2.31.00 placed her 7th and Maisie's time of 2.31.04 placed her 8th.

Carlile had 5 swimmers race the 200 fly today, with all 5 being big pb's. Congratulations to Jessica Persson and Alexander Mackay, along with the girls in the final tonight.

Day 2 roundup...

Adding to the distance medal count from last night, William Mackay claimed a silver medal in the boy's 16 years 800m freestyle. It was tough conditions in the heat during the day, but Will kept his composure and stuck to his race plan well. This is Will's first national medal. Congratulation's Will.

Ruben Langley also raced in this event, finishing 6th overall in the 16 years age group. Great job boys!

To round out the night the girl's 13-14 years medley relay stepped up to finish 5th, dropping 1.56 seconds off their entry time. It was a great way to finish off another successful night for the team.

The team of Isobel Mulcahy (31.33), Maya Ostapenko (34.46), Lexie Cook (29.30) and Kailtin Barry (27.08) should be very proud of the way they swam.

Bring on day 3.
