National Age 2024 - Day 6

Day 6 saw Carlile feature in 22 races.

It was another big day of IM racing, with 10 swimmers doing this event. It is great to see so many orange caps in this event in age group swimming.  There were 6 swimmers progressing through to the night finals.

Swim of the Day...

Swim of the day goes to Maya Ostapenko in the girls 200m IM claiming her first national medal. Maya came away with the bronze in a PB time of 2.20.64, dropping 1.42 seconds off her time. Maya got up and attacked it from the start, putting herself in the race at the end of the backstroke and then digging deep through the freestyle. It was a brilliant race from Maya. Across this year Maya has dropped a massive over 9 seconds in this event. Great work Maya!

The Frenzy of Finals continues...

Kaitlin Barry had another fantastic night of finals, racing the girls 13 years 100m Freestyle, and then backing up 30 minutes later to race the girls 200m IM. Kaitlin finished 4th in the 100 free, and then claimed her second gold of the meet in the 200m IM. It was incredible to see Kaitlin come home in the freestyle leg in a time of 29.97. Very impressive swimming Kaitlin.

In the girls 17 years 100m Freestyle Olivia Wunsch claimed her second gold medal of the meet, finishing in a time of 53.99. It was great to see Liv swim out with composure, turning second at the 50m turn and then charging home to swim over her competitors in the last 15m. Liv's second 50m time of 27.52 was her fastest back end split she has done. Great job Liv.

Justin Wang made it through to his first final for the meet in the boys 16 years 100m breastroke. He swam a big pb this morning to qualify for the night swim, and then repeated his performance for the second time for today. Justin's time of 1.06.60 saw him finish 7th. In this event Ethan Cook qualified into the B final to secure himself a second swim for the day. Ethan finished 17th in a time of 1.08.74. Great work boys!

Special mentions...

Special mention to Joshua Whitty, Evelyn Song, Ruben Langley and Alexander Mackay who finished their national campaign off today with pb swims. This is what the swimmers train for so it was great to see them finish off a good week with a bang. In the IM swims this morning Lexie Cook finished 9th in the girls 14 years 200m IM in a pb, and Maisie Langley won her heat from the outside lane, swimming over the top of everyone in the freestyle leg in a big pb. Great job team.

We are ready to tackle day 7 and the final day of the meet.
